Chapter 18: Third Times The Charm!.....?????

Nothing had changed in the short time we were absent from the goblin’s caverns. The smell was getting more and more ripe, as the various bodies throughout the cave started to rot, but nothing I could do about that right now. Once again, I lamented the lack of a loot function of this world. One more checkmark in the ‘this is a real world, not a game’ column.

Before heading to the throne room, I checked the other areas first and nothing appeared to have changed. I was not willing to rifle through all the bodies, either, and given that most goblins only had small amounts of coins on them, if any, I didn’t feel that I was missing much. I knew any real treasures would be found either with the remains of the avatar of Decay, or perhaps near the throne room.

Resigning myself to dealing with the death in the throne room, I headed there. Again, nothing had changed, and as previously mentioned, the remains of the avatar of Decay, the hooded figure, were still there, and not just an empty robe.

I poked at the body first, with my staff, seeing if I could remove the robe without actually touching the body. I could, and other than the robes and the figure’s staff, there was nothing. As I poked through the remains, they suddenly dissolved into mere dust, as if the decay on them caught up with them in a single moment. I knew there was more to it than that, as I could see subtle signs of the bruised, purplish energy swirling through the remains. It quickly dissipated, though, and I wasn’t even certain I really saw it with how fast it happened.

I wasn’t sure I wanted to touch the staff, but I knew I didn’t want to leave it here, either, not knowing who, or what might pick it up. I reached down, grabbed the figure’s staff, and strapped it across my back, my own staff still in my hands.

Shadow gave a low growl as I did so, but nothing else, so I assumed she was fine with it.

Behind the throne itself, not surprisingly, there was a large entrance to another room, with only a tapestry covering the door. Through the door was the chief’s quarters, and they were done up in the same manner as the throne room itself. That is, at first glance, it was luxurious, and well appointed, but a closer look showed that the tapestries hanging from the walls were shoddily made, and cheap, as well as worn, and old. The same for the rugs covering the floor, and even the bedding area was the same.

It seemed the
